Psychology Statue

野花社区鈥檚 Psychology Department prepares students for numerous and varied career options. Among the possibilities: Psychology majors go on to teach, conduct research, serve as consultants, and diagnose and treat people. They work in an assortment of settings, such as schools, corporations, nonprofit organizations and government agencies.

Psychology Department faculty members create a student-centered learning environment, optimal for the exploration of psychology. Their range of expertise affords students the opportunity to truly explore the many ways psychology applies to our world.

The department鈥檚 course offerings cover the breadth of the discipline鈥檚 specialties. Our experienced faculty members are happy to guide you toward coursework based on your interests, strengths and career goals.

For undergraduates, we offer a major, minor and teaching certification program. For students pursuing graduate work, there are three tracks from which to choose.

Emerita/Emeritus Faculty

Dr. Joan Bailey, Professor Emerita of Psychology at 野花社区, served on the faculty from 1988 to 2023. Her career was defined by a commitment to evidence-based teaching, advanced pedagogical practice, extensive university service, and the promotion of student success. 

Dr. Bailey advised and supported countless undergraduate and graduate students in their academic and professional growth and also mentored adjunct faculty. She taught a wide range of undergraduate and graduate courses and consistently received excellent student evaluations highlighting her engaging teaching style and dedication to student learning.

During her career, Dr. Bailey provided leadership as Co-Chair and Acting Chair of the Psychology Department and contributed extensively to university and departmental committees addressing accreditation, curriculum development, faculty hiring, and online learning. She also earned multiple professional certifications in effective college instruction and quality online teaching through the Association of College and University Educators and Quality Matters.

Beyond the university, Dr. Bailey demonstrated a commitment to public health through her service with the National Cancer Institute and Blood Cancer United. She worked on initiatives focused on patient and community education.

Since retirement, she has continued to publish on instructional design and student engagement, mentor adjunct faculty, and support community health initiatives.

Dr. Bailey earned her Ph.D. in Social-Personality Psychology from The Graduate Center of the City University of New York and her B.A., summa cum laude, in the Special Honors Curriculum at Hunter College. She regards teaching and mentoring students as among the most rewarding and meaningful aspects of her academic career. 

Raised in the Soundview/Clason Point projects of the South Bronx, Dr. Ansley W. LaMar has been part of the 野花社区 community for 50 years. A retired professor of psychology, he has also served as Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, Chair of the Psychology Department, and Director of the Educational Opportunity Fund Program.

Dr. LaMar is the founder and president of LaMar Educational Enterprises, LLC, and the founding director of SuperKidz Kamp鈥攁 leadership development program for youth. An award-winning public speaker and workshop leader, his areas of expertise include motivation, conflict resolution, leadership, and positive psychology. His research has explored altruism, race relations, and the academic needs of urban college students.

He is President of the Board of the Sickle Cell Association of New Jersey, past president of Gateway 2 Toastmasters, and a former board member of the Holmes Presbyterian Camp and Conference Association. Among his honors are 野花社区鈥檚 Walter Glospie Memorial Service Award and the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Service Award.

Dr. LaMar holds a Ph.D. in Social Psychology and is a certified life coach and master practitioner in neurolinguistic programming. He is married to Mary Bentley LaMar, founder of the Sickle Cell Association of New Jersey, and they have one son, Hunter.
